The following map displays the rates of malarial disease in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia from January 1, 1862 to June 30, 1862, and can be compared to the map on the following tab, displaying the rates for its Federal counterpart, being the Union Department of the Shenandoah. This data is taken from Table XXXIV of Charles Smart's Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion. (Smart, 106) The data on this heat map displays the varied intensity in number of malarial cases recorded monthly for the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia between these dates. From the comparison of this map to the one that follows, it can be concluded that although the Confederate Army of Virginia suffered far more in the summer months than the Union Department of the Shenandoah, the Union Department had more consistently high rates of malarial disease.
